Why ASR?

ASR is a modality that combines the core principles found in other modalities. To fight to claim their space within the therapeutic world, modern modalities have differentiated themselves to help them stand out of the pack. They have done this by narrowing their focus on what they attempt to address through therapy.

CBT focuses on managing thought patterns, but isn’t structured to address feelings.

EFT has focused on couple relationships and now, in an attempt to broaden their approach, has launched other versions of EFT to address different contexts such as individual therapy and family therapy.

IFS seeks to help clients address inner distress but doesn’t have anything for their external relationships.

Specialization has created a perception that these therapies are the only way to address these issues. However, all of these therapies are leveraging particular core principles. These core principles are truths of human existence, which is why they find evidence and validation through research.

This has left therapists having to pursue training in multiple modalities to cover their bases and be able to serve the diverse needs of their clients. Hundreds of hours and thousands of dollars may still leave you deficient in certain areas. We all have limitations on how much time and money we can spend on trainings after all.

Early systemic therapies were more focused on understanding the complete dynamics of human functioning both internally (within oneself) and relationally (traditionally within the family system). For example, Murray Bowen explored the need for differentiation of the individual within family systems due to the effects of transgenerational processes and homeostasis. This larger, more systemic perspective and approach has been lost. Until now.

ASR leverages the primary core principles other modalities address individually and synthesizes them into a cohesive whole in an intuitive, multi-systemic approach that address both cognitive and affective aspects of an individual’s experience and facilitates both internal and relational repair in all contexts.
